With Modbus, BACnet and Profibus, A/B labeling refers A as the negative green wire and B as the positive red wire, in the definition of the D-sub connector and M12 circular connector, as can be seen in Profibus guides. The WattNode® BACnet and Modbus® meters communicate using RS-485 (TIA/EIA-485-A) half-duplex, differential signaling at 9600, 19200, 38400, and 76,800 baud. This allows either twisted pair cables to be used with terminal blocks, or Ethernet Cat5e or Cat6e cable to be used with RJ45 jacks.

The ideal RS485 network requires a dedicated wire for ground. You need a third ground wire to make sure that no one on the network violates the common mode voltage specification.
